  • identify and practise opposite verbs;
  • read and comprehend a text about Opposite Day;

WARM-UP AND OPPOSITE VERBS

The lesson starts with a warm-up in which students identify two statements containing two opposite verbs (love and hate) and express opposite opinions. Afterwards, they work with some vocabulary by matching verbs with their opposite meanings. Then, students choose a pair of verbs and write contrasting opinions using them. After that, they practise vocabulary a little more and complete gaps using the opposite verb pairs from the previous task (show/hide, forget/remember, etc.). Then, students go further and add one more word or phrase to each verb pair.

READING AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students discuss statements that include opposite verbs (e.g. I’m better at giving advice than getting it), say if they are true for them and provide examples. After that, students read a text about Opposite Day and do some tasks to check their comprehension. Then, they discuss questions about the text, Opposite Day itself and similar celebrations. Afterwards, students decide how some places or situations (e.g. at school, at a restaurant, at a birthday party, etc.) might look during Opposite Day. They also consider points from the task (e.g. clothing, behaviour, music, etc.) to help them develop their ideas.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students write answers to the questions using opposite verbs. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
