prepositions of place for beginners

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this ESL lesson are to:

  • learn and practise basic furniture vocabulary;
  • describe and talk about pictures and listen to a dialogue.

In this lesson, students talk about household items! They learn prepositions of place for beginners (e.g. next to, on the right) and work with vocabulary for common furniture. They revise rooms in a house, listen to a recording about a man looking for his things, and describe pictures of rooms and the positions of items. Students do pairwork and talk about items in their own homes

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This lesson on prepositions of place for beginners starts with a warm-up. With their own ideas, students complete the sentence, ‘My favourite room is… because… ’. Next, they look at grouped pictures of furniture and say which room the items are from  (e.g. kitchen, bedroom). After that, they look at the pictures individually and name them correctly (e.g. carpet, wardrobe). Following that, students look at different activities (e.g. going to sleep), and choose two items to match them (e.g. lamp, bed). Next, they look at a picture of a room and do some tasks (e.g. say what room it is, say two things you can/can’t see, etc). Then, students are introduced to prepositions of place for beginners.  They read a short text about the picture they saw and match bolded words and phrases with pictures indicating prepositions of place (e.g. under, between).

PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE

Students continue practising prepositions of place for beginners. They look at pictures and complete short texts with the correct words according to what they see. After that, they listen to a recording and say which four things the man is looking for (e.g. jacket, book) Then, they listen to the recording again and say if the sentences are true or false. They also correct the false sentences with the right information. After that, students discuss some general questions. Next, they do some pairwork. Student A chooses a word from a box (e.g. fridge) and gives details about this object in their home. Student B listens and does the same. Each student chooses and describes three objects.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students look at a picture of a flat and describe it using words and phrases from the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
