Grammar - 'will' for promises, offers and decisions

practise will and won’t

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • talk about everyday life situations;
  • practise will and won’t to give responses.

With this lesson, students discuss daily situations and use will and won’t to express promises, offers and decisions made at the moment of speaking. They also examine situations, create responses using will and won’t and write dialogues to situations shown in pictures.

WARM-UP AND GRAMMAR

The lesson starts with a warm-up in which students give examples of different commitments in daily life (e.g. decisions people make at supermarkets). After that, they match questions and responses (e.g. Why didn’t you make your bed this morning? – I didn’t have time this morning, but I’ll do it tomorrow.). Then, students examine the answers and find examples that express a promise, an offer and a decision made at the moment of speaking. Next, they read sentences which contain will and won’t (e.g. I’ll pay, I’ll do it better next time, etc.) and decide in what situations people might say them. Following that, students practise will and won’t by combining them with words in brackets to create responses to different statements.

WILL AND WON’T PRACTISE

In this part of the lesson, students receive a set of cards with statements (e.g. I quit my job but it’s a secret; Would you like tea or coffee?; etc.) and practise will and won’t. In the task, Student A reads a card to Student B, who responds using will or won’t. Student A also replies with will or won’t. Then, they swap roles using a new card. In the next activity, students look at photos showing different situations and discuss questions about what is happening in the pictures and their perspectives on each case. Finally, they write dialogues for the pictures using will and won’t twice in each dialogue.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students respond to situations in two ways using sentence beginnings and will and won’t. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
