LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- learn and practise collocations related to business and investment;
- talk about the topic of franchising and its aspects;
- practice listening and interpretation skills through an explainer video.
In this lesson, students learn and apply collocations with ‘revenue’, ‘profit’, ‘assets’ and ‘investment’ (e.g. minimal revenue, generate profit, asset disposal, a return on investment, etc.), discuss the pros and cons of starting a franchise and practice listening and interpretation skills through an explainer video about a well-known restaurant franchise.
WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY
This lesson starts with a warm-up in which students come up with two arguments to support the idea that starting your own business is a great investment and, the opposite, that it is a bad investment. Then, students work with some vocabulary and complete defined nouns as they see the first letter of each of them (e.g. revenue, profit, assets, etc.). After that, they match the nouns with their sets to create collocations related to business and investment (e.g. recoup an investment, generate revenue, hold assets, etc.). After exploring the vocabulary, students look at some statements and find a phrase in each that has the opposite meaning to the collocations in the previous task. Then, they choose two or three of those statements to elaborate on them.
VIDEO AND DISCUSSION
In this part of the lesson, students complete the definition of ‘franchise’ with the words ‘franchisee’ and ‘franchisor’. They also share whether they know any franchises and discuss how successful they are. After that, students read about the pros and cons of a franchise and choose the correct words to create more collocations related to business and investment (e.g. widening the profit, a consistent source of revenue, minimize the profits, etc.). Then, they go further into the discussion and think of other pros and cons of a franchise business model. Afterwards, students watch the first part of an explainer video about McDonald’s and complete some notes about it. Then, they guess the answers to some questions about McDonald’s franchises and watch the second part of the video to check their ideas. The lesson finishes with a discussion about opening a business and franchising.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students decide if the words are in the correct sentences and replace the incorrect words with those from other sentences. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
