DISCUSSION & VIDEO
The lesson starts with a guessing activity. Students look at four words (nursery rhyme, limerick, sonnet, haiku) and think about the word that connects them. After that, they discuss questions and share whether they like poetry, what makes it different from prose and what helps you appreciate poetry. Students look at some statements about poetry, find the ones they agree with and explain why. The statements raise different topics: from rhyme in poetry to poems people publish on social media. This lesson about poetry also includes a video. Students watch the first part of the video and answer some questions. Then, they watch the second part of the video and correct the sentences. Finally, they discuss some more questions and watch the last part of the video to compare their answers.
ANALYSING POEMS
In the second part of this lesson about poetry, students get a chance to read and discuss poems by famous authors (Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, William Wordsworth, Amy Lowell). First, students check out some poetry terms (metaphor, alliteration, simile, rhyme). Then, they read the poems or the excerpts and decide which poetry terms are present there. At the end of the worksheet, there are a few suggestions for extra activities. The teacher can ask students to write poems using different poetry terms. Students can also work in pairs and create a poem together.
