LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this ESL lesson on ‘there is’ and ‘there are’
- describe one’s workspace and learn relevant vocabulary;
- watch and discuss short videos about peoples’ workspaces;
- practise using ‘there is’ and ‘there are’ structures, choosing prepositions, and forming questions.
This lesson uses ‘there is’ and ‘there are’ exercises to help students describe their workspace! They discuss their own workspaces and ask about their partner’s while using structures ‘there is’ and ‘there are’. Students learn vocabulary for common workspace items (e.g. headphones, a charger). They do question formation and work with prepositions ‘on’, ‘in’’, and ‘next to’. They also watch some short videos on different workspaces.
WARM-UP, VIDEOS AND VOCABULARY
This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students read sentences and tick the ones that are true for them (e.g. I work in an office). Then, they look at words and pictures of workspace objects (e.g. a lamp, a keyboard). They do different tasks while considering the objects (e.g. name three things you have got in your workspace). After that, they watch a short video and tick the things they see. Next, they watch a video about a teacher’s workspace. They read some sentences and complete them with numbers (e.g. one laptop, two notebooks). Then, they watch the video and check their ideas. In the next task students start practising ‘there is’ and ‘there are’ exercises. They complete grammar rules about ‘there is/there’s’, ‘there are’ by analysing the sentences from the previous task.
MORE PRACTICE AND DISCUSSION
Students continue the lesson by doing more ‘there is’ and ‘there are’ exercises. Using the rules they completed previously, students choose the correct word in sentences (e.g. there is/are…). Afterwards, they look at a picture and match questions with answers. They also tick the sentences that are correct. Next, they write five questions about their partner’s workspace. They ask their partner the questions and answer theirs. Moving on, students read sentences and match them to pictures. Then, they look at the picture from the previous task again and complete gaps with prepositions (in, on or next to). They order words to create questions and answer them. Students finish the lesson with more ‘there is’ and ‘there are’ exercises in a pairwork activity. Students get three pictures each and ask each other about the things in the pictures. Using the prepositions and there is/there are structures, they find differences between pictures.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete texts with words in boxes. Then, they write five sentences about their dream workspace. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
