Practical ideas for making your ESL lessons fun!

A light-hearted classroom environment can have a profound impact on students’ motivation and language acquisition. But, we know it’s not always so easy to set the mood! So, we’ve come up with a few practical solutions that might do the trick…

Put them on the spot 😜

Students always expect you to start on timebe well-prepared, and give a lot of homework

So, imagine this! Your online lesson starts and instead of you, students see your dog sitting in your place! 🐶 Or you come into the classroom with a big red balloon or a bouquet of flowers instead of textbooks. Apart from putting students on the spot and making them ask questions, you will lighten the mood and teach them to react in unexpected situations

Weird is the new fun 🤠

Sometimes, a dash of weirdness can work wonders in engaging students, helping them to open up and even instilling in them a love for language learning. Try something unexpected, like wearing a funny hat or a crown during the lesson. This can pique their curiosity and prompt them to ask questions about it. Use this as a springboard to introduce new vocabulary or concepts (e.g. modals of deduction) to speculate on what’s happening, making the learning experience memorable and enjoyable.

Banish Boring Words 🙅

To infuse excitement into your ESL lessons, consider forbidding the usage of a particular word or phrase for the duration of the class. For example, challenge your students to eliminate the word “think” or “go” from their speech. This playful restriction can lead to creative thinking and encourage students to explore alternative expressions, enriching their language skills.

Become the Grammar Police 👮

Introducing the “Grammar Police” can add an element of fun and engagement to your lessons. Prepare cards, such as red cards 🟥 for serious or recurring mistakes, yellow cards 🟨 for minor slip-ups, and green ones  🟩for excellent language use. Display these cards when appropriate, turning grammar corrections into a game. This approach lightens the mood and helps students learn from their errors without feeling discouraged.

By implementing these strategies, you’ll foster a positive and enthusiastic atmosphere in your ESL classes. And probably even become your students’ favourite teacher 😀
