LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this speaking lesson are to:

• explore vocabulary to talk about gardening;
• watch a video and discuss the benefits of community gardens;
• create a plan to start a community garden.

With this speaking lesson about gardening, students work on some vocabulary (e.g. herb, grow food, flower bed, etc.), talk about their experiences and watch a video on community gardens. They also elaborate on how they would create a community garden and discuss different ideas for city agriculture.

VOCABULARY AND VIDEO

This speaking lesson about gardening starts with a warm-up in which students complete sentences about gardening using words from a word cloud (e.g. mow the lawn, soil, dig, etc.) and their own ideas. Then, they answer the question “Have you ever done gardening?” and discuss questions about their personal experiences. After that, students, in one minute, think of as many benefits of gardening as possible. Next, they watch the video about community gardens and discuss it by completing sentences with their opinions on the topic. 

DISCUSSION

In this part of this speaking lesson about gardening, students answer questions and talk about the benefits of community gardening, potential drawbacks and the role of local entities in supporting such projects. Following that, they imagine they have decided to start a community garden project and a plan considering important points (e.g. location, budget, plant selection, etc.). Finally, students look at some more ideas for city agriculture and discuss questions about their opinions.
