LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this A1 lesson on rooms in a house are to:

  • discuss rooms in a house and share personal preferences about housing;
  • learn and practise the names of rooms and adjectives to describe them;
  • watch a flat tour video.

With this lesson, students talk about where they live, watch a video of a flat tour and explore vocabulary related to rooms (e.g. kitchen, hallway, bedroom, etc.). They also learn adjectives to describe rooms (e.g. bright, messy, huge, etc.), practise the structures with ‘would like’ and talk about their dream home

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This A1 lesson on rooms in a house starts with a warm-up. Students discuss questions about where they live. Afterwards, they watch a video of an apartment tour and look at a plan. Students choose the correct rooms according to the video. Following that, they look again at the plan and say if sentences about the rooms are true or false. Students also correct the false sentences. Next, they discuss what they think about the flat in the video. After that, students complete sentences with names of rooms (e.g. I sleep in the…, I get dressed in the…, etc.). Then, they look at the pictures of places and match them with words (garage, garden and balcony). 

VOCABULARY AND DISCUSSION

At this point in this A1 lesson on rooms in a house, students match phrases (e.g. bright kitchen) to their corresponding pictures. After that, they match adjectives (bright, messy and huge) with their opposites (small, tidy/clean and dark). Next, students add another adjective to describe the pictures. They can use the adjectives from the previous tasks and their ideas. Afterwards, students choose the living options that best suit their preferences (e.g. I would like to live… in a huge old house. OR in a small flat.). They also explain their choice. Following that, students look at different people (etc. a celebrity with a lifestyle blog) and imagine where they would like to live. They then use ‘would like’ structures and the vocabulary from the lesson to add more details. Finally, students talk about their dream home using some points (e.g. city/country, near/far from, etc.).

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students finish words where the first letters are provided. Then, they say which sentences are true for them or change some information to make them true. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
