LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson on possessives in English are to:

• learn and practise possessive nouns and adjectives;
• discuss people’s favourite things and personal information;
• listen to a dialogue about social media photos.

With this lesson, students talk about their favourite things (e.g. film, colour, country, etc.), discuss social media profiles and share personal information (e.g. name, email address, favourite song, etc.). They also work on possessive nouns and adjectives in conversations and listen to a dialogue between two people talking about social media photos.

WARM-UP AND POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES

This lesson on possessives in English begins with a warm-up. Students complete gaps in questions about personal favourites (e.g. What’s your favourite song?) They use words in pictures (film, colour, country and song). After that, students ask and answer the questions in pairs. Then, they complete sentences with the names of social media platforms (e.g. I’m on…, I’m not on…, My friends are on…, etc.). Afterwards, students match sentences containing subjects and possessive adjectives (e.g. You like cars. – Is your car a Ford?). Following that, they complete gaps with phrases with possessive adjectives. They then talk about themselves using words and phrases related to personal information (e.g. name, surname, favourite colour, etc.). When students finish, their partner talks about them (e.g. Her name is Kim). Next, they swap roles. 

DISCUSSION AND POSSESSIVE NOUNS

At this point in this lesson on possessives in English, students look at social media profiles and answer questions about the information they see (e.g. What’s her name?, Are they happy in the photos?, etc.). Then, they read sentences about Eric and Olivia, the ones in the profiles. Afterwards, students listen to a recording and decide if the sentences are true or false. Next, they listen to the recording again and choose the words they hear in the dialogues. Following that, students read phrases exemplifying the use of possessive nouns. They then choose the correct words in statements about Eric and Olivia. After that, students write the answers to questions about Eric and Olivia’s photos. Finally, they add ’s or ’ to questions about different people (e.g. What’s your boss’s name?, What’s your colleague’s favourite colour?, etc.). Then, students answer the questions in pairs. 

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students read a text and complete gaps with possessives. Then, they write the correct word + ’s or ’  in statements about the text. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
