LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- use vocabulary to talk about aspects of lifestyle;
- watch and discuss a video about healthy vs unhealthy lifestyles;
- talk about personal lifestyles and those of friends and family;
- practise Present Simple negative to talk about habits.
With this lesson plan, students practise Present Simple negative by talking about what they do and don’t do to maintain their lifestyles! They talk about food choices, exercise and other habits. They discuss what they usually do, as well as the customs of the people they know. They discuss a video about healthy vs. unhealthy lifestyles and use the target grammar to describe pictures.
PRESENT SIMPLE NEGATIVE
This lesson plan starts with a fun word search, in which students have to find things they consider to be healthy. Next, students look at sets of pictures (e.g. coffee/water/tea; guitar/video games/tennis) and match sets of words with the boxes. Then, they name the individual pictures in each box. After that, students look at some phrases and complete the gaps with the right sets of words. Next, students use the phrases to name three things they do and three things a person they know does. They also need to add some details (often, on Fridays, in the evening, etc.).
After that, students are introduced to the Present Simple negative by reading an example sentence showing the difference between it and the affirmative (e.g. I don’t go to bed early. I go to bed late.). Students have to come up with four more sentences to mimic the structure. Then, students do various exercises to understand the grammar. They match the persons (I/you/we/they; he/she/it) with the verb forms (don’t; doesn’t).They look at the example and complete the gap, and they choose the correct word in the sentences. Afterwards, students look at some categories and say three things about each, using the target grammar (e.g. things dogs or cats don’t do).
VIDEO AND DISCUSSION
Students continue the lesson by watching part of a video about a healthy and an unhealthy lifestyle. They complete a table with examples from the video. They complete the sentences about two men from the video, using the Present Simple negative to say what they do or don’t do. Then, they watch it again and check their answers. Next, students discuss some questions about the video and healthy lifestyles in general. Lastly, students look at pictures of people and read short descriptions about them. From the information, they say what they think the people do and don’t do, using words in a box provided to help them (e.g. junk food, bed, radio, walk).
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. Students complete gaps in sentences with the verbs in brackets so that the sentences are true for them, using either Present Simple negative or affirmative. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

It’s good to see that ESL Brains has been creating lessons for A1 students.
I usually miss a larger amount of content prepared for this specific target group; adults who are beginners and even those who are real beginners.
The lessons provided by ESL Brains are awesome and the way they are organized have been helping my students greatly.
Many thanks!!
Thank you 🙂
Hi! I think this should be bundled with “talking about habits” (although that’s a2 level)
Hi, thanks for the comment. ‘Talking about habits’ is a much more challenging lesson so I would not recommend doing it with A1 students.
