LESSON OVERVIEW
In this lesson, students will watch a video about the important role of trees in urban areas, answer multiple choice questions and learn several (advanced) collocations and expressions related to the topic of green cities.
WARM-UP & VIDEO
The warm-up activity introduces students to the topic of green cities. It starts with a list of a few video titles related to the natural environment and missing one word each. Students look at a box with seven words (e.g. foliage, retain) and use them to complete the titles. They speculate about what they could learn from these videos and discuss with their classmates which videos they’d like to watch and why.
Before they watch a video about green cities for the first time, students look at five multiple choice questions and try to guess the correct answers. Afterwards, they watch the video and check if they were right. They move on to a matching activity which prepares them for the next listening task. They look at six half sentences taken from the video and put them together. While watching the video for the second time, students have to decide what the sentences refer to. As a follow up, they reflect on the video and share opinions on the topic.
LANGUAGE INPUT & SPEAKING PRACTICE
The next activity gives students a chance to consolidate the vocabulary related to green cities. Students read a list of seven ideas for keeping cities green and decide how to complete a gap in each of them with one of the four given words (A-D). Then, they read the ideas again, put them in order of importance and justify their decisions. The lesson finishes with a mini debate. Students have to imagine that their city is launching a campaign called “Green Future”, aimed at educating people about the importance of trees in urban areas. Their task is to choose the best picture for the campaign poster. Then, they need to justify their choice and explain why they didn’t pick the other pictures.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
You’re welcome! I’m glad you liked it 🙂
THANKS A LOT, & GOD BLESS
My student loved this lesson. Thanks !
That is great to hear 🙂
Hi, I have a general request. Is it possible to put the level of lesson on the front page? I am old-school, I print out my lessons and its important that I can see what level the lesson is. Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback! We will consider this but we can’t promise that we will implement such a thing soon. We collect feedback from different sources and prioritize changes based on many factors.
Thanks alot. It was really helpful.
Thank you!
great worksheet – the questions are quite tricky – very interesting
I am wondering about Ex6 Q4
Cities should sustain themselves ……… renewable energy.
I would say “from”
but the worksheet says “with”
Thanks, Alastair. Let us look into that.
In that case, ‘with’ seems more natural to use with ‘sustain’. However, after some consideration, we decided to replace ‘from’ with ‘by’ to avoid confusion and a possible double key.
Great lesson!! Thank you!
