LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • discuss accidents at work and safety rules;
  • watch a video about safety in the workplace;
  • explore vocabulary to talk about injuries.

In this lesson, students explore warning signs and their messages, practise vocabulary related to injuries (break, fall off, slip, etc.) and watch a video on workplace safety. They also discuss safety rules and strange regulations at work.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students look at the pictures of warning signs and discuss questions about where they can find them, their purpose and what could happen if those warnings are ignored. After that, they think of safety messages they could see in different places (e.g. building site, restaurant kitchen, office, etc.). Then, students complete stories about workplace accidents with vocabulary to talk about injuries (e.g. fall off, dislocate, hit, etc.). Following that, they use these verbs to complete pairs of collocations (e.g. slip on a banana skin, on mud; fall off a chair, a bike; etc.). Next, students talk about different situations (e.g. something that has happened to you, something that often happens in your workplace, etc.).  

VIDEO AND DISCUSSION

At this point in the lesson, students watch the first part of a video about workplace safety and say one thing they expect to see in it. Then, they watch the second part of the video and tick the injuries they hear. After that, students think what words might be missing in sentences about workplace safety practices. Then, they watch the video and check their ideas. Next, students discuss questions about safety rules at work and how they can be followed. Finally, they read about some strange workplace rules (e.g. All employees must ask before visiting the toilet; Employees are not permitted to have beards; etc.). Students discuss why they might be introduced, how fair they are for employees and how big of a problem they would be for them.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students read situations and describe what happened using vocabulary to talk about injuries. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
