LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- discuss the nature and purpose of art;
- learn advanced adjectives related to art;
- practise target vocabulary by evaluating art pieces.
In this lesson, students practise advanced adjectives to talk about art, discuss possible purposes of it, analyse art pieces and watch an informational video about performance art. They also complete texts with the vocabulary from the lesson and have conversations about performance art’s impact and their personal experiences.
VOCABULARY AND VIDEO
This lesson starts with a warm-up in which students reflect upon three possible art purposes and explain why one is more important than the other. After that, they read statements and match advanced adjectives to talk about art (e.g. unsettling, immersive, ineffable, etc.) with their definitions. Then, students discuss two statements and explain whether they agree with them. Afterwards, they examine six photos and discuss questions to evaluate the art pieces using the vocabulary from the lesson. Following that, students watch the first part of a video about performance art and check their comprehension by naming three things the video mentions about the topic. Next, they watch the second part of the video and discuss what messages the artists tried to convey by their performances.
DISCUSSION
In this part of the lesson, students discuss questions about various aspects of performance art, including its historical context, effectiveness in conveying messages, relevance to modern conditions, and personal experiences with performance art and artists. Then, they analyze two photos and say what they think the artists are doing and what their performances mean. After that, students practise the target vocabulary and complete two texts with advanced adjectives to talk about art. Finally, they discuss questions about art pieces, artists’ methods of conveying messages, interest in participating in specific art projects, and emotional responses to artworks.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students match adjectives and nouns to make collocations and write three sentences using two collocations in each. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
