| LESSON OVERVIEW
In this ESL lesson students learn friendship and relationship vocabulary as well as discuss the difference between a friend and an acquaintance. The lesson also contains a video, speaking and reading activities.
FRIENDSHIP AND RELATIONSHIP VOCABULARY
The lesson starts with a warm-up. Students look at the words (e.g. close friend, acquaintance, buddy, mate, etc.) and discuss the difference between them. A teacher can also check whether students understand the difference well by reading them a few examples of relationships and asking students to describe them with one of the words they discussed.
Students move on to learn even more friendship and relationship vocabulary. First, they match the sentence halves. Then, they look at the quiz and complete the questions with the words and phrases from the previous exercise. After that, students do the quiz about a person they know. They calculate their points and read the description of their relationship with this person. Students then discuss the results and say whether they agree or disagree with them. They also talk about other differences between friends and acquaintances and decide whether it’s possible to make a close friend on the internet.
VIDEO & DISCUSSION
In this part of the lesson, students talk about making friends online. First, they watch a video about an app and have to guess how it works. They read a short description of the app and check their answers. Then, students discuss the app and say whether they would like to use it. After that, students read four profiles of the people from the app. The texts contain the friendship and relationship vocabulary from the lesson, so students practise it once more. They also complete a few sentences about the people and explain their answers.
At the end of the lesson, students create their own profiles for the app following the prompts. There are a few suggestions for the teacher on how to do this activity with one student and a group of students.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
The ESL lesson about friendship and relationship vocabulary also includes a supplementary task. Students need to find incorrect words and correct them. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet and can be printed for students or accessed in the e-lesson plan for online teaching.
