LESSON OVERVIEW
In this worksheet, students look for synonyms of some advanced phrases, practise word formation and reflect on what it takes to succeed in innovation.
This is a Critical Reading Club worksheet. With this format, students need to read an online article at home and do the exercises in the classroom. Learn more about how to use such worksheets and their benefits in our post.
ACTIVITIES
The lesson starts with a brief discussion in which students brainstorm the words they associate with the word innovation and justify their choices. Next, they look at four pairs of phrases and try to explain to each other the difference in meaning in each pair (e.g. bring about changes vs foster changes). The following task refers to the ‘innovation equation’ which students already read about in the article set as homework. They agree or disagree with the idea and discuss how it could be used by entrepreneurs to foster innovation. After the discussion, students focus on another vocabulary task. They read five gapped statements and have to change five given verbs into the correct parts of speech to complete the sentences (e.g. suffice – insufficient, conform – non-conformity). After this word formation task, students once again read the five statements related to the lesson topic and decide whether they agree or disagree with them.

This was really challenging for my advanced students. The vocabulary was really useful too!
I got them to do work in groups to make a mini-presentation arguing their opinion on one of the last discussion topics.
Thanks for the feedback, Audrey. Great idea to do some group work here.
