LESSON OVERVIEW

This online dating lesson plan is based on a video featuring Whitney Wolfe who is co-founder of the dating app Tinder and founder and CEO of Bumble. The worksheet consists of many different tasks and introduces your students to the world of dating apps as well as teaches them love and relationship vocab.

WARM-UP

Students study the term agony aunt/uncle (BrE) and advice columnist (AmE) in the box and answer the questions about these terms. To help them understand what these people do, they have also an excerpt from an old newspaper. Next, they move to a vocabulary activity. They need to read two letters to the agony aunt Sophie. In their own words, they have explain the meanings of the words and phrases in bold. These phrases are all about love and relationships. Finally, students imagine they’re Sophie and think of advice they would give in these situations.

VIDEO

Before watching the video, there is a short lead-in exercise. Students get logos of four (dating) apps and need to think what the video is about and whether they are familiar with any of these apps. Then, they move to the first video exercise. They have to read some statistics, choose their answers, and watch the video to check whether they’ve been right. Next, they watch the video again and answer a few comprehension questions.

DISCUSSION & FUN PART

After watching the video, students move to a short discussion about online dating and the info presented in the video. They get several questions with underlined words and phrases in them. Before answering them, they need to add one synonym of the underlined words and phrases. Additionally, this online dating lesson plan ends with a fun task about dating apps. Students read information about four unusual dating apps and need to decide whether these apps exist or not. The tricky part is that all these apps are real ?
