ESL worksheet for adults

LESSON OVERVIEW

This ESL worksheet for adults is based on the TED Talk by Tim Brown titled “Designers – think big!”. The goal of the lesson is to talk about design and design thinking and how it can affect our lives.

WARM-UP AND DISCUSSION

First of all, students should do a word-formation task on vocabulary which is helpful for the discussions on design. There are such words as viable, aesthetic, feasible, etc. Then, there are some general discussion points on design and students’ own ideas about well-designed products. In addition, there are two exercises on words from the talk. The first one is a definition-matching task and the second deals with collocations. Students learn such phrases as obsolete products, reinvent the idea, tackle an issue, etc.

VIDEO AND DISCUSSION

Then, students move to talk through the quotations from the speech. They have to decide whether they agree with them or not as well as give examples. Finally, the last task makes students collect their own ideas on how design can help in some areas of life. If possible, this task is great to be done in pairs as students can exchange their ideas.
The TED Talk itself is quite long – almost 17 minutes, so it is better to ask students to watch it at home. This ESL worksheet for adults was created for Design students at the University of Arts so it resonated with their interests; however, there is not much professional language there, so everyone who has some interest in tinkering, designing or finding solutions might like it.

Video too long for an online class setting. Would be better with a five minute sample and questions on that. Otherwise, a nice lesson.

Thanks for the comment! It’s one of our older lessons and the video is quite long. Now, we tend to use shorter videos in our lessons. However, there is no comprehension so students need to just watch and discuss it. I agree that it’s also a good idea to choose just part, build a short comprehension task around it and then discuss the quotes from ex. 5 🙂

Is there a minimum subscription period if I choose a monthly subscription?

No, there's no minimum required number of subscription months. You can cancel any time you want. Basically, you can sign up and then cancel your subscription the next day, which will mean you have access for 1 month and won't be charged again.

What currencies can I pay in for my subscription?

Our default currency is USD (American dollar), but you can also pay in EUR (euro), GBP (British pound sterling) or PLN (Polish zloty). You can change the currency you want to pay in at the Pricing page before selecting a subscription plan.

How can I edit an e-lesson plan?

You can get your own editable copy of an e-lesson plan and make changes to it. To do so, either (1) make a copy of it on your Google Drive (preferable method) or (2) download it in a Powerpoint format (but formatting might be a bit off so we can’t guarantee that it will work well).
