LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- talk about shopping for food and everyday grocery items;
- review units of measurement and container vocabulary;
- practise pronunciation of container phrases.
In this lesson, students review units of measurement and container vocabulary used for different food products. They practise this vocabulary through a dialogue, a pronunciation task and several speaking activities, including planning a shopping list for a dinner party. Students also compare prices and quantities of everyday products and discuss their own shopping habits.
60 minVocabulary LabUnlimited Plan
This is a Vocabulary Lab worksheet. With it, students are introduced to a set of vocabulary on a specific topic and practise it through controlled activities, speaking tasks and games. Learn more about it here.
WARM-UP AND UNITS OF MEASUREMENT
This lesson starts with a warm-up in which students guess what food products are shown in photos. Afterwards, they complete supermarket special offers with these products. They then use vocabulary from the offers to complete sentences that introduce units of measurement (e.g. 1 kilo is 1,000 grams, 1 litre is 1,000 millilitres). Moving on, students choose the correct unit to complete further sentences, distinguishing between units for liquids (litres, millilitres) and solids (grams, kilos, ounces, pounds).
CONTAINERS AND PRONUNCIATION
In this part of the lesson, students continue working on units of measurement and container vocabulary. They read a dialogue between two people making a shopping list and match phrases in bold (e.g. a carton of milk, a packet of pasta, a jar of jam) with the correct pictures. They then listen to a recording to notice how the word ‘of’ is pronounced in natural speech and practise saying phrases as one word. Moving on, students choose the odd one out in sets of container phrases and use them to say how much and how often they buy certain products. Following that, they estimate how much of an item they could buy for a given amount of money and imagine spending an extra $100 on groceries. Finally, students choose a menu and plan two dishes and a dessert for dinner with friends. They prepare a full shopping list using units of measurement and container vocabulary from the lesson.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students choose the correct words for units and containers. They then complete the gaps with numbers based on prices and quantities where they live. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it, cut it up and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
