LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- talk about colours;
- learn and practise the structures with there is/there are;
- practise describing what’s in a place or a photo.
In this lesson, students learn colour vocabulary and practise ‘there is/there are’ structures through a dialogue and several speaking games. They watch a short video about a social media trend called ‘colour hunt’ and use it to practise the target structure further. Students also play memory and guessing games in pairs, describing what’s in different places and photos.

COLOURS AND GRAMMAR
This lesson starts with a warm-up in which students name things in a photo and say what colours they are. Afterwards, they unscramble colour words (e.g. pink, brown, orange) using pictures to help them. Then, they say what colours things around them are (e.g. their phone, their bag, their favourite food). Then, students read a dialogue about a street and say which picture it describes. They then use the dialogue to complete rules for ‘there is / there are’ structures, covering positive, negative and question forms. Moving on, students choose the correct words in example sentences and say if each one is true for them.
THERE IS/THERE ARE PRACTICE
In this part of the lesson, students work in pairs and play a game where they write two true and one false sentences about a place, and their partner guesses which sentence isn’t true. Students also watch a video about the ‘colour hunt’ trend and say what the people in it do. Then, they complete a description of the trend using ’there is/there are’. Finally, in pairs, students play a memory game with photo cards, describing what’s in a photo and asking their partner questions using ‘there is/there are’ structures.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students put words in the correct order to form questions and sentences with ‘there is/there are’. They then answer some of them and say if others are true for them. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it, cut it up and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
