Tasks at work (Present Simple affirmative)

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• discuss different work activities;
• practise useful vocabulary for describing work tasks;
• review the Present Simple third-person singular affirmative;
• work on the pronunciation and spelling of verbs.

In this lesson, students explore phrases for describing work activities (e.g. use a computer, serve food, talk on the phone), listen to speakers discussing what people do at work and review vocabulary for professions (e.g. waiter, pilot, shop assistant). They examine the form and use of Present Simple third-person singular verbs, analyse the pronunciation of verbs (/s/, /z/ and /ɪz/) and talk about work activities they and other people do. Students also play a Two Truths and a Lie game where they share experiences and guess which things are lies.

VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students examine place photos (e.g. university, café, office) and say what they think of. After that, they match the halves of sentences about work activities (e.g. when I’m in the office, I use a computer to go online). Then, students look at pictures for different occupations (e.g. chef, office worker, waiter) and listen to people describe tasks. They then use these professions to complete sentences about the recording. Moving on, students explore the Present Simple and complete a table with verbs from sentences (e.g. he loves his job). Next, they say how we change the verb for the Present Simple third-person singular affirmative form. Following that, students choose the correct forms of verbs to complete sentences. Afterwards, they choose a profession from the previous task. Students say three things about this person for their partner to guess the profession.

DISCUSSION AND MORE PRACTICE

In this part of the lesson, students explore the spelling of verbs in the Present Simple third-person singular affirmative form. They use the correct verbs in sentences to complete the spelling rules. Following that, students complete statements about work activities by writing the correct form of verbs (e.g. Leo does the cleaning after work). Moving on, they listen to verbs (e.g. cooks, does, finishes) and categorise them according to their sound (/s/,/z/ or /ɪz/). Then, students talk about their job and the work activities they and other people do. They complete sentences using the target phrases from the lesson (e.g. have a lot of meetings, help customers, send emails) and their own ideas. Students use the correct forms of verbs. Finally, they play a Two Truths and a Lie game where they share experiences, practise third-person singular verbs and guess which things are lies.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete sentences with the correct form of verbs. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it, cut it up and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
