Humanoid robots at home

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• talk about domestic robots and smart home devices;
• watch parts of a video about AI-trained domestic robots;
• practise passive structures in several tenses.

In this lesson, students discuss smart home technology, watch parts of a video about domestic robots and analyse the use of these devices. They read short texts about ways to train a domestic robot, review the passive voice and explore various tenses. Students also examine photos and debate the use of humanoid robots in different sectors.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This lesson starts with a warm-up and allows students to practise passive structures. First, students talk about the smart technology people use in their houses, considering different categories (cooking, cleaning and caring for a pet). After that, they watch the first part of a video about domestic robots and say what they think of one of the robots’ performances. Moving on, students watch the next part of the video about a robot called Neo and say why some points are mentioned. They then discuss questions about the use, safety and price of domestic robots. 

PASSIVE STRUCTURES AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students read short texts about ways to train domestic robots and say which of them they think might be the most effective. They then look at the texts from the previous exercise again to practise passive structures. Students identify them, explore rules and compare them with the active voice. Moving on, they choose the correct options in sentences related to smart home devices. Next, students complete sentences using the passive voice in various tenses. Finally, they use photos to discuss the use of humanoid robots in different sectors, considering important points (e.g. the required skills, advantages over human workers). 

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students practise passive structures by rewriting sentences. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
