LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• talk about focus and concentration;
• watch a video about brain exercises for focus;
• practise conditional sentences in the Zero, First and Second Conditional.

In this lesson, students discuss how easy or difficult it is to notice details and stay focused. They review and practise conditional sentences, exploring the structure and use of the Zero Conditional, First Conditional and Second Conditional. Students watch a video about brain exercises that can improve concentration and discuss techniques for staying focused. They also apply conditional structures to real-life situations related to distraction and productivity.

WARM-UP AND CONDITIONALS

This lesson starts with a warm-up in which students answer questions to test how observant they are, then discuss how easy or difficult this was and reflect on their own ability to concentrate. Afterwards, students match sentence halves to form conditional sentences and say which is most true for them. Moving on, they look at these sentences to identify the Zero Conditional, First Conditional and Second Conditional, working out the rules and structure of each. Following that, students practise conditional sentences by choosing the correct options in further example sentences and say which ones are true for them. Then, they use verbs in brackets to complete sentences with the correct conditional form.

VIDEO AND MORE PRACTICE

In this part of the lesson, students predict missing words in sentences about a video on brain exercises, then watch the video to check their answers. They watch part of the video again, try the exercises themselves and discuss whether they think such exercises can improve concentration. Moving on, students read a list of techniques for staying focused and discuss which ones they have tried or would like to try. Finally, they practise conditional sentences more and choose several everyday situations involving distraction and say what they usually do, which techniques they’d try and which they wouldn’t.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete sentences with their own ideas, paying close attention to using the correct conditional form. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it, cut it up and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
