irregular plural nouns

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • talk about everyday objects, animals and people;
  • learn and practise regular and irregular plural nouns;
  • practise the pronunciation of plural forms.

In this lesson, students review how to form regular plurals and learn a range of irregular plural nouns (e.g. woman/women, child/children, mouse/mice, tooth/teeth). They practise these forms through picture-based exercises, a listening task and several speaking activities, including describing photos and playing a guessing game. Students also compare singular and plural nouns to identify the odd one out in different sets.

Vocabulary LabUnlimited Plan

This is a Vocabulary Lab worksheet. With it, students are introduced to a set of vocabulary on a specific topic and practise it through controlled activities, speaking tasks and games. Learn more about it here.

WARM-UP AND REGULAR PLURALS

This lesson starts with a warm-up in which students look at photos, answer questions and complete a table with singular and plural nouns. Afterwards, they learn spelling rules for regular plurals that take more than just an ‘-s’ (e.g. box/boxes, knife/knives, leaf/leaves), completing the missing letters in each word. Moving on, students complete gaps with plural nouns shown in pictures and ask their partner questions using this vocabulary.

IRREGULAR PLURAL NOUNS PRACTICE

In this part of the lesson, students look at pictures of different places and say what they can find there, using vocabulary from the lesson. They then learn a set of irregular plural nouns and match singular and plural forms with the correct pictures (e.g. a woman/three women, a foot/many feet, a child/eight people). Following that, students listen to a recording and identify which two words are mentioned in each sentence. Then, they listen again and repeat the sentences to practise pronunciation. Moving on, they choose the odd one out in sets of singular and plural nouns and explain their reasoning. Students also describe photographs using vocabulary from the lesson. Finally, in pairs, they play a guessing game where they describe singular and plural words for their partner to identify.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps to form regular and irregular plural nouns based on pictures. Then, they answer personal questions using this vocabulary. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it, cut it up and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
