| LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this first lesson with new students are to:
- talk about English learning experiences;
- review useful vocabulary;
- listen to a podcast excerpt about English.
In this lesson, students share their experience with English and review various phrases for the discussion (e.g. spend time learning, to be able to, as important as). They listen to part of a podcast about the English language, discuss some data and reflect on ways to improve their English. Students give their opinion and talk about their expectations, goals and preferences for their English course.

WARM-UP AND PODCAST
This first lesson with new students starts with a warm-up. Students look at pairs of points related to English (e.g. my education and English OR my work and English), choose a topic and share details about it. Afterwards, they examine the statements from the previous exercise again and say which are true for them and which are not. Students provide details. Moving on, they listen to part of a podcast about why people learn English and answer questions about it. Following that, students listen to part of the podcast again and complete the gaps in sentences about the global dominance and widespread use of English.
DISCUSSION AND USEFUL VOCABULARY
In this part of this first lesson with new students, they examine data about speakers of English in the world and do tasks where they evaluate the pros and cons of the situation for learners. Afterwards, students read sentences about people who try to improve their English and complete the gaps with useful words (e.g. daily, occasionally, recently). Following that, they look at the sentences from the previous exercise again and discuss strategies and personal habits for improving English skills. Moving on, students complete sentences exploring their learning expectations, goals and preferences for their English course.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
The first lesson with new students also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students read a text about a model of World Englishes. They decide if sentences are true or false and correct the false ones. They then write a paragraph explaining how English is used in their country. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
