NEWS SUMMARY
Beijing is hosting the World Humanoid Robot Games. At the event, robots are expected to operate fully autonomously. They participate in conventional sports competitions such as athletics and tennis, but the Games also recreate situations machines could face in the workplace or during emergencies. These include warehouse operations, firefighting and less flashy activities like connecting cables. Many believe those simple tasks are the real measure of a robot’s ability. Therefore, not everyone is impressed with robots that can run faster than Usain Bolt. Instead, the commentators say that the more revealing tests could come when robots encounter small imperfections in the physical world, like an object out of reach or a misstep.
